Most of us don’t think about our taps until something goes wrong, and a constant drip, an awkward handle or a sudden loss of pressure can quickly make an inconvenience a plumbing disaster.

While some tap problems are simple enough and can often indicate only the need to replace some parts, some symptoms suggest a deeper problem, like a leak or a malfunction in your plumbing system. Escaping water or making the wrong move if you attempt to fix the taps yourself can be a disaster.

Common Tap Problems

A dripping tap. The eternal drip, drip of water can drive one mad.  It can mean a worn washer, a defective valve or a damaged cartridge. All these and many more are likely causes of the tap’s failure to make a proper watertight seal.

You may also realise that the handle is hard to turn, or seems to move up and down, or sideways. No matter how hard you try to make this tap work, it will only result in making things worse.

Water pressure that is too low is another problem many have when it comes to plumbing. If this is happening on one faucet, it could just be a case of a plugged aerator or a part of the fixture itself. However, if you are suddenly noticing a lack of pressure from a few or all of the faucets in your home, you need to investigate deeper to find out what the underlying issue truly is.

If you see that there is some leaking happening around the base of the faucet or under the sink, the solution is pretty obvious; you need to get it fixed. If you leave a leak for some time, you can damage your cabinets and flooring more than you might think.

Why Is My Tap Dripping?

When a tap still drips even when shut off, it could be an issue with one of the internal parts.

This was common in traditional taps because the washers would wear down, but it can also happen to mixer taps if the cartridge or seal gets damaged. Mineral deposits can also accumulate inside the fittings and affect their performance.

It is not always a matter of tightening it. Sometimes, doing that can cause even more damage without preventing the leak.

If the tap still drips, a plumber can check if a part can still be replaced or if it is better to just replace the fitting itself.

Should You Repair Or Replace A Tap?

Basically, a tap does not need to be replaced because it is broken.

If all the working parts of the tap are in good condition except one or more parts that need replacing, it will work just like new; this could be your best and cheapest answer. If something is broken, replace that part and the rest of the tap will still look and work great.

Replacement is more recommended when a tap has become too corroded, continually breaking, or no parts are able to be replaced. Sometimes very old taps won’t be able to be fixed either.

Areas of Service

We Go Everywhere in SA

We service all suburbs across the greater metropolitan area of Adelaide, including the Adelaide Hills.

There are some simple causes of a dripping tap that can be fixed by yourself so long as you have the tools and replacement parts. If the cause is not so readily available, or if after you replace the problem parts and the tap is still dripping, then you may need a plumber.

A slow leak is rarely deemed an emergency, but you should still fix the tap. A larger leak, especially one that is now causing water to flow where it should not, may be more of a pressing matter.

If all other taps in the house are working correctly, this indicates that it is a problem with that individual fitting. The possible cause of this issue would likely be a blocked aerator. Cleaning this part will in most cases solve the problem.

The issue may be that a washer, cartridge, valve or seal has worn out and is not allowing the tap to turn off completely. There may also be a mineral buildup that has prevented the seal of the internal parts of the tap.
